Frequently asked questions

Are your plants organic?


Box & Sprout is not Organically Certified although we do follow organic principles for growing. Not all of our seed stock is organic in origin although many varieties are. Once the seeds arrive at Box + Sprout HQ they are sown into Soil Association approved peat-free compost and if they need to be potted on, this is also done into Soil Association approved peat-free compost. We do not use any persistent chemical sprays at our HQ.




Do you grow all your own plants?


Many of our plants are grown, from seeds, on our own premises. At times of exceptional demand we sometimes need to purchase plants as plugs from trusted, high quality 3rd party suppliers. We inspect all plugs received, look after them until they are strong enough and re-pot them with appropriate soil and pot sizes.




Do your plants contain GMOs?


No. Though the seeds we buy from our suppliers are produced using the latest breeding techniques, none are genetically modified or derived from genetically modified parent material. Due to the free movement of pollen it is not possible for open pollinated crops to be guaranteed to be free from the presence of adventitious GM material. However, our seed suppliers work closely with breeders, suppliers and the relevant Government bodies to ensure that any such risks are minimised.




How long will it take for my plants to arrive?


We will deliver your plants within 3-5 working days (although it may be sooner than that!). We will send you an email when your order is ready for dispatch and will be in touch to confirm a suitable delivery time with you. However, if you have any questions, or would like to see if we can provide a smaller plant sooner, please do get in touch!




What do I do when my plants arrive?


Put them out into their forever home! Read through our guidance notes and feel free discuss with us upon delivery should you have any questions! Give your plant a quick drink when it arrives and then water according to the guidance notes from then on.




What happens if you no longer have a product I ordered?


We are very sorry that this may occasionally happen - plants are unpredictable creatures and so is the British weather! As such, we may need to ask to substitute items in your order for an equivalent variety. If this occurs, we will contact you to inform you of the need to substitute. In the rare instance we cannot find an alternative which is acceptable for you, we will offer a full refund.




Where do you deliver to?


We currently can only cover London, Zones 1-3 for our large plants and Grow Club, with nationwide delivery for our baby house plant collection and boxes. If you live outside of this area, and would like to place an order, use the ‘contact us’ form and provide your address in the message. We’ll do our best to work something out for you.




What are your delivery costs?


We charge a flat rate of £5.00 / order. If you place an order over £50 however, we'll ship to you for free!




What kind of yield can I expect from my vegetable plant?


Every type of plant, and every individual plant, is different. Your yield will depend on several factors including watering, sunlight, and in some instances sufficient exposure to pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Care instructions are provided with each plant to ensure you have the best chance of a great yield. Do note however that often a plant will yield more in its second year.




Coronavirus (COVID-19) update


To ensure our continuity of service so that get your plants when promised, we have limited our stock to the small number of products available on our shop page. Box + Sprout are now personally delivering big plants straight to your door (which is why we are currently only offering London-based deliveries on our large plants) and are strictly following social distancing guidance with no-contact deliveries. Our team are washing their hands many times each day to do all we can to limit the chance of spreading infection, to keep both our lovley customers and our staff healthy. Please do get in touch if you have any concerns you'd like to discuss.




Why are your vegetable plants more expensive than others?


At Box & Sprout, we supply you with everything you need to grow your own veg - up front. Our mission is to make growing vegetables as easy and accessible as possible for Londoners with limited space. That's why we provide you with the plant, as much as you need of the correct compost, and a high quality terracotta or ceramic pot that is the final size your plant will need - so no repotting is required. In addition, we offer a premium service, as we are personally available to address any of your questions or concerns, should you have any issues growing your plants. Many other sellers just provide the plugs (small plants) in little plastic pots that will almost immediately need to be repotted and will require significantly more care. This means you would need to buy both a pot and soil separately.
